Richard L. Trumka

Richard L. Trumka was elected President of the AFL-CIO on September 16, 2009. At the time of his election, he was serving as AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer, following three terms as president of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). The Nemacolin, Pennsylvania native was elected to the AFL-CIO Executive Council in 1989, as the UMWA reaffiliated with the federation, and chaired its Strategic Approaches and Energy Committees. He also served on the Executive Board of the federation's Industrial Union, Maritime Trades and Transportation Trades departments. Mr. Trumka received a law degree from Villanova Law School, after completing his undergraduate studies at Penn State University.
