John J. Sweeney was elected to a fourth term as president of the AFL-CIO at the federation's convention in Las Vegas in December, 2001. He was first elected president in 1995 on a platform of revitalizing the 13 million-member federation. At the time of his election, Mr. Sweeney was serving his fourth four-year term as president of the Service Employees International Union, which grew from 625,000 to 1.1 million members under his leadership. He serves as a member of the Executive Committee of the BIT Advisory Board.
