Linda Chavez-Thompson was elected to the position of executive vice president of the AFL-CIO on October 25, 1995. She is the first person of color elected to an executive office of the federation and is the highest-ranking woman in the labor movement. Prior to joining the AFL-CIO leadership, Ms. Chavez-Thompson was an international vice president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, serving that union from 1971 to 1995.
